Thanks for responding and you are very right I myself have just recently started investing other than my regular 401K and have to really gear up to reach my retirement goal. So far I just a couple index funds and few SIP's in mutual funds, looking into a few dividend stocks now to make up a sizable passive income in dividends in next few years.

Thanks for writing. I think, and if you search this blog using index as the keyword, you'll find that I am a fan of index funds. You will need to hold a basket spread across five or six indices including international and emerging markets, bonds and equities. For the average investor - which is the vast majority of us, you will get much closer to your retirement goal using index funds. Just keep in mind, that retirement goal depends on more than just what you pick as your investments; it depends on your contributions. And the average investor tends to contribute far less than they should.

Hey Paul,

I jumped here from Mutual Funds for utterly confused blog. So what are your thoughts about index funds, they are not actively managed but they deliver close to the benchmark?
Do you think its a win-win or am I biased...
